Gratitude and celebration: name the good

A simple Christian practice of noticing God's goodness and celebrating it together while making room for honest sorrow.

Shared rhythm

Begin with what you can practice together.

Pause long enough to notice something God has given, done, healed, taught, provided, or sustained. Name it plainly and celebrate it together.

  1. Ask each person to name one specific reason for gratitude from the past week.
  2. Thank God for those things in ordinary words.
  3. Mark one of them with a simple expression of joy: food, music, a walk, a story, a prayer, or time together.

Celebrate with honesty

Scripture gives us words for thanksgiving and for lament. A family can thank God for an answered prayer while still carrying something painful. Both can be spoken truthfully before him.

Make it concrete

Specific gratitude is easier to remember. Name the meal someone brought, the conversation that brought peace, the strength to keep going, the provision that arrived, or the beauty you almost missed.

Shavuot and Sukkot are natural seasons for this kind of thanksgiving because both carry strong themes of God’s provision and faithfulness.
