Hebrew month guide
Sivan: Word, Spirit, harvest, and witness
A Scripture-first Christian guide to Sivan: Sinai, Shavuot/Feast of Weeks, Pentecost in Acts 2, Jewish context, generosity, and Spirit-filled witness.
Start with Scripture
Read Exodus 19-20, Esther 8:9, Leviticus 23:15-21, and Acts 2.
Exodus places Israel at Sinai in the third month; Esther later gives us the name . Leviticus gives the seven-week harvest journey to the Feast of Weeks, and Acts 2 places the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.
From counting to Shavuot
Shavuot anchors the culmination of this counting season. Sivan opens with the closing days of Counting the Omer . The fixed Jewish calendar places Shavuot / Feast of Weeks / Pentecost on 6 Sivan.
The joins the feast to seven weeks of counting, harvest, offerings, generosity, and rejoicing. Jewish tradition also strongly associates Shavuot with the giving of Torah at Sinai. That gives the month a rich biblical and Jewish setting before we ever arrive in Acts.
Word and Spirit belong together
At Sinai, God speaks and forms a covenant people. At Pentecost, Peter’s Spirit-filled proclamation is saturated with Israel’s Scriptures and centered on the risen Jesus. The Holy Spirit does not draw attention away from God’s Word or from Christ; He empowers a people to understand, obey, worship, and bear witness.
Read Acts 2 past the moment of outpouring. The chapter moves into repentance, baptism, teaching, fellowship, prayer, generosity, worship, and witness. Spirit-filled life becomes visible in a formed community.
Receive, rejoice, and bear witness
Ask the Holy Spirit for fresh filling. Receive Scripture with a willing heart. Thank God for material provision and share it generously. Pray for courage to make Jesus known across ordinary relationships, workplaces, homes, neighborhoods, cultures, and languages.
Sivan brings together receiving and sending: God speaks, God gives, God pours out His Spirit, and His people become witnesses.
Practice it together
- Children: read part of Acts 2 and pray for another nation or language group.
- Teens: practice explaining why Jesus matters to you in words that are honest and understandable.
- Adults: pair one prayer for the Spirit’s power with one concrete act of obedience and generosity.
- Elders: tell how the Lord has used both Scripture and the Spirit to guide you.
Carry this through Sivan: receive God’s Word, welcome the Holy Spirit, rejoice in His provision, share generously, and ask for courage to bear witness to Jesus.
